2020 Whau Arts Festival

2020 Whau Arts Festival pre-lockdown
Phase one complete: Before the nationwide lockdown of March 2020, we put an open call out to the artist community and confirmed 25 projects of excellence.

2020 Whau Arts Festival / Whau ArtBook edition
We are now in phase two of the project – to be announced by the end of June 2020….

Kia ora koutou,

June 2020 marks the sixth edition of the Whau Arts Festival and we want you to take part!

Over the last five years,  a diverse range of people have created and experienced the arts in a proudly local and community-based context. From music, writing, visual arts, games, theatre, digital experiments, workshops, poetry, dance, film, food to walking projects and community clean-ups around the Whau river (to name just a few past projects), the festival’s programme has stretched to the widest reach of our participants’ imaginations.

This is a festival for you, by you. Each year, the festival’s offerings are developed collaboratively through our annual open call out. Our ongoing kaupapa is to produce, support and showcase projects that aim to be inclusive and experimental within a neighbourhood environment. For that reason, we never know what the festival will look like until you help shape it.

YES – we have limited resources

YES – we lack access to an array of traditional spaces

YES – we might need to think outside of squares

BUT – we are committed and always up to the challenge of trying our very best to find a way, make it fun and interesting for all involved – no matter how little or big your experience in the arts is.

WHEN: The festival dates are flexible and will run throughout the month of June

We are grateful to our largest funder – the Whau local board – but without the added powers of generous people, volunteers and business support and sponsorship, this festival would and could not exist.
