Toi Raranga: celebrating Matariki

In celebration of Matariki, this was an exhibition and free flow day of traditional weaving demonstrations including korowai, piupiu and tāniko and hands on contemporary Māori weaving practices, with lots of korero, kai and aroha wrapped in between. We first hosted this exhibition and event on in 2019 and again in 2020.

JUNE 8, 2019 + JULY 18, 2020

The day was jointly led by Evelyn White from Whau Weavers and Waipuia Teddy of Ngāti Maniapoto.

Waipuia Teddy learnt under the guiding hands of her grand-Aunt Diggeress Te kanawa and Dame Rangimārie Hetet. Atakura and Terewai will be travelling with her from Te Kuiti. The group will demonstrate traditional weaving skills from extracting fibre from flax to korowai creation.

On the contemporary side of the spectrum is Avondale-based, Evelyn White, Amber Wikitera from Te Aopouri and Roze Hendrix from Ngāti Hine with a hands-on workshop, guiding you through the use of traditional methods and modern materials for creating your own work.
