Ever wondered what fascinating stories, wildlife, and history are hidden in your own backyard? The Whau Wildlink Map, designed by Rosebank local Nina Patel, shows just how special the Whau River and its neighbourhoods are. 🌊

The map has become a wonderful resource for Te Whau Pathway Project and has already been shared with local schools including Avondale College, Kelston Girls College, Blockhouse Bay Intermediate, Glenavon School, Kelston Boys High School, Kelston Intermediate, and Avondale Intermediate. Tamariki have loved spotting places they know, discovering local history, and learning about wildlife like the shy Moho Pererū (Banded Rail). 🎏
The map highlights unique natural spaces like Mōtū Manawa / Pollen Island Marine Reserve, the Whau’s rich Māori history as a portage route, and the amazing community groups caring for our awa. 🫶🏾
“I wanted to share the exciting natural environment that the Whau area and river host, and that I am lucky enough to see every day” says Nina. “I want people to know what’s in their backyard.” 🏡 Keep an eye out for the map in community hubs, schools, and events along Te Whau Pathway.
