“My grandparents and mum immigrated to Aotearoa in the 60s, and my grandpa built our family home himself in Te Atatu Peninsula. They sacrificed so much to create and enjoy new pathways for my family and me, so I hope these 6 flags bring joy to those who walk along this new pathway as well!”
Artist Serene Hodgman was born and raised in Auckland and is of Samoan, Tongan and Rotuman heritage. Her work is inspired by the crafts of Moana women who have gone before and in particular her Nana’s garden in West Auckland.
Serene’s practice takes contemporary materials that reflect the domestic environments of Pacific islanders and marries those materials with weaving and embroidery traditions. As Serene says: “I love experimenting with patterns, colour and rhythms that tell stories and bring joy to people. I hope when people see my works, they see home in them too.”
