In June, we had the joy of working with tamariki from Kelston Primary School and Ko Taku Reo to create artworks inspired by the swales we helped plant and learn about. 🌱✨ Bringing their creations back into the park, right in their own backyard at Archibald Park, means the kids can feel proud seeing their work add colour and storytelling to the environment around them. 💫

So, what’s a swale? We didn’t know either….
A swale helps prevent flooding and erosion while also improving water quality by filtering out pollutants. It slows the flow of water, allowing it to soak into the ground where it is naturally filtered. Plants within the swale further help by removing pollutants from the water before it reaches the Whau awa. 💧
Art and environment go hand in hand – when tamariki connect creativity with kaitiakitanga, they’re learning to care for both people and place. 🌿
Big thanks to Nate Savill @objektcare for helping bring these artworks to life in the swales, we really appreciate your passion and support for our community art projects! 🎨
